One of the benefits of playing live online casino games or online slots in the UK is that you don’t have to deal with any ghostly beings interrupting your online gambling session. But if you’re curious about the supernatural and are interested in real-world casinos that are supposedly haunted, be sure to take a look at these five spine-chilling gambling locations that have some hair-raising tales to share.
1. The MGM Grand/Bally’s Resort and Casino/Horseshoe Las Vegas
This is not a story about three casinos, but one casino that has had its name changed three times. The Horseshoe Las Vegas was previously known as Bally’s Resort and Casino, and before that, it was known as the MGM Grand (not to be confused with the new MGM Grand). But regardless of its name, not many will forget the tragedy that unfolded at this casino on 21 November 1980.
Early on the morning of the 21st, a fire broke out at The Deli restaurant at the MGM Grand. Despite being the world’s largest, and one of the most modern, casinos at the time, it was poorly protected against fire, with only certain floors having proper sprinkler systems. There was also no automated fire alarm located in this part of the building, so when the fire broke out due to an electrical fault, there was little way to contain it. This led to the deaths of almost 90 people, mostly due to smoke inhalation.
While decades have passed since this tragic accident, there are still reports of ghosts who appear to be living their last moments at the casino.
2. Canfield Casino in New York
Saratoga.com expresses how iconic the Canfield Casino is while also acknowledging the strange happenings in their article ‘The Haunting of Historic Canfield Casino’. This article shares how the building was first built in the late 1800s as an exclusive club, and having survived for multiple centuries, it is believed to have built up a collection of ghostly residents and incidents.
In the 1990s and in 2007, a woman in a Victorian gown was seen at the casino. For three years between 2007 and 2010 other paranormal events took place, including a glass being slapped from the hand of a visitor by an unknown presence, a garbage can lid taking to the air of its own accord before crashing to the floor, as well as the smell of cigar smoke appearing in rooms where no-one is smoking, and other inexplicable events.
This casino garnered such a reputation for its ghostly occurrences that in 2010 SyFy (a science fiction channel) sent their Ghost Hunter team to see what they could find. They found unusual electromagnetic activity on the third floor and also reported being touched by an unseen presence.
3. Colorado Grande Casino
The Colorado Grande Casino can be found in the small town of Cripple Creek. Once a popular gold mining town that saw thousands arrive in the late 19th and early 20th century to seek their fortune, the amount of gold in the mines gradually declined, and the town’s population with it. Today the town is home to only around 1,200 residents. With the collapse of the mining industry, the town turned to gambling as a way to boost interest and bring money into the region. Several casinos were opened to help turn the town’s fortunes around.
One of these casinos is the Colorado Grande Casino. According to the US ghost tour site Denver Terrors, the casino is said to be one of the most haunted locations in the country. In its blog ‘Colorado Grande Casino and Hotel’, it shares a story about a few of the ghosts that are apparently known to frequent the casino.
The most notable story is about a red-haired woman called Maggie who is not only supposed to have quite a positive demeanour but is also seen playing the slot machines with a male ghost from time to time. What makes her story truly special is that she is believed to have been around before the building was turned into a casino, meaning she has learned how to play the slot machines that she apparently now enjoys. There is also another female apparition named Lily who only likes to play with purple balloons and will pop other balloons if they are left around.
4. The Luxor Las Vegas Casino
Many people instantly recognise The Luxor due to its iconic appearance. This venue was designed as a black pyramid and is situated just across from the Mandalay Bay casino and hotel. However, this unusual design also seems to have attracted an unusual number of events, with accidents, suicides, fights, diseases, and the murder of an employee being among the recorded deaths at the casino.
Some believe that the deaths may be connected to the Egyptian design of the casino, while others believe in other supernatural causes. Whatever the cause, the idea of an otherworldly force at play is supported by the numerous paranormal events that have taken place at the casino. According to Ghost City Tours in its article ‘The Curse of the Luxor’, there are rumours of a blonde female spirit with a fondness for strangling guests as they sleep, visitors who have found it difficult to breathe at times in the hotel, as well as strange sounds in the hallways. There is even a Tripadvisor review of the sound of a soap bar ‘clinking’ in the soap dish in the bathroom every morning at 8.30am even when there is no one in room 30018’s bathroom.
5. Whiskey Pete’s Hotel Casino
Whiskey Pete’s is a casino that stands out on the route between Las Vegas and California. The casino stands on the site of a service station that once belonged to Pete McIntyre, a rumoured brewer of illegal alcohol, who requested that when he died he be buried on the mountain so that he could watch over his service station.
However, according to the supernatural history site ‘Dead History’, McIntyre’s coffin was disturbed during the construction of the casino in 1994. Since the opening of the casino, a ghost believed to be old ‘Whiskey Pete’ himself has been seen at the casino, with some visitors reporting that they’ve felt uneasy at times, as if they’re being watched. Even though the service station is long gone, it’s believed that Pete has never stopped keeping an eye on the land after the workers accidentally dug up his resting place.
