5. The Gambler – Kenny Rogers, 1978

Another Country Music Hall of Fame member that most people will recognise (even if they hate country) is Kenny Rogers. While Rogers had an incredibly successful solo career, many people outside of the country music community likely recognise him for his work with other musicians like Dolly Parton and Sheena Easton. 

But gamblers likely know Rogers for “The Gambler”, a country song with a simple but catchy tune about a young man who meets a gambler on a train and the advice that the gambler shares with him. The gambler very quickly picks up that the young man is down on his luck and gives him some life-changing advice in exchange for his last bit of whiskey and a cigarette. His words of wisdom pretty much boil down to learning which hands to keep and which ones to throw away, both in the game of poker and, very likely, in life.

While “The Gambler” was much beloved, it only took home a Grammy in 1980. This song became the foundation for multiple television movies called “The Gambler” starring Rogers himself.
